Anxiety affects us emotionally and physically.
Some children become so disturbed about school that they find it difficult to get out the door each morning. Other people can’t go to work or visit with friends due to the overwhelming effects of anxiety.
Many people find anxiety brings on physical reactions that mimic heart problems, feelings of disorientation, problems breathing, and the concern of fainting or losing consciousness. These intense feelings make an individual think the worst things about their health.
Anxiety can disrupt the digestive tract and cause people to have unexpected vomiting or diarrhea. Some people may think that they are about to die.
These emotional and physical feelings are difficult to cope with, and a person may believe nothing will help.
Some forms of anxiety are hard to shake.
Anxiety is experienced differently by different people at different ages and circumstances.
Friends and family members often don’t understand what the problem is all about. That can make it difficult to cope with your feelings when the people around you don’t understand or they say things like, “It’s not that bad. Snap out of it.”
But you know it is a challenging issue, and you can’t just snap out of the feelings that overwhelm you. It’s been going on way too long to be something you can control at the snap of your finger.
There is help for this problem, and a therapist is the best resource for addressing your anxiety. Several therapeutic interventions for managing anxiety can help an individual learn how to handle the physical and emotional effects of anxious experiences.
Various methods are available for treating anxiety.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is not for everything or everyone, but it is for a lot of people. I have seen children overcome school anxieties rather quickly when EMDR Flash is used to help them. One of the symptoms of trauma is anxiety, and getting to the root of the trauma can help children and adults overcome anxiety.
Several workbooks are available for adults, children, and teens which provide a resource for helping to identify the adverse effects of anxiety. Clients can take many of these workbooks home and work with them at their convenience. I use a workbook to help my clients understand the concepts of anxiety and how your body may feel.
Breathing and relaxation techniques also can help resolve previous trauma and the needed relief to feel healthy again.
